Yes, it has been confirmed that Portishead, the sweet Bristol trip-hop band, is coming to Vancouver’s PNE Forum on October 24, 2011. They will also stop in Montreal on October 7 and in Toronto on October 10.
Remember trip-hop? I certainly do. The late-nineties bands including Massive Attack and Portishead were releasing broody, innovative music and videos. Portishead consists of singer Beth Gibbons, guitarist Adrian Utley and DJ Geoff Barrow. Their latest release, “Third,” in 2008 went in a different direction than their earlier work. You may remember smoky soul-influenced tracks like “Sour Times,” and “Only you,” but
their latest album was very different and, save for Beth Gibbons’ characteristic voice, hard to recognize as Portishead. This is definitely a good thing, as tracks like “The Rip” stick in your head, and the music is more experimental.
Could it be that Portishead is releasing another album? I sure hope so.
Tickets for Vancouver run $55 plus service charges and go on sale Friday, July 15, 2011. You can buy them at Red Cat, Highlife, or Ticketmaster.
